AI Overviews and AI Mode
AI Overviews is the generated summary Google places above its classic results. AI Mode is Google's separate conversational search experience. They are different surfaces with different triggering behavior, and a brand can appear in one and not the other.
Why they need measuring separately
They do not always draw the same sources, and they do not appear for the same queries. Reporting a single figure for Google therefore describes neither surface accurately, in the same way that averaging two different engines produces a number belonging to no engine.
The volatility problem
Both surfaces appear and disappear for the same query over time. A brand's presence in an AI Overview can change without anything on its site changing. That is a strong argument for repeated sampling with intervals attached, and against reading a single check as a fact about your visibility.
