Share of voice in AI answers

Also called Share of answers, AI share of voice

Share of voice in AI answers is the proportion of answers in a category that mention your brand rather than a rival. It is only meaningful when the denominator is stated, and across this tool category the denominator frequently is not stated.

The denominator decides the number

The same brand can be reported at very different share figures depending on what the tool divided by. Divide mentions of your brand by mentions of the handful of competitors a customer typed into a settings screen, and share of voice becomes a measure of how few rivals were configured. Add a genuinely dominant competitor to that list and everyone's share drops, with nothing having changed in the world.

The defensible denominator is every brand named in the sampled answers, discovered from the answers themselves rather than from a configuration form.

Three questions that settle it

What is the denominator. How many answers is this computed from. And does the figure change if I add a competitor to my tracked list. If the answer to the third is yes, the number is a configuration artifact rather than a market measurement.
