How to find out who gets cited instead of you

The short version. Read the sources of the answers where you lose, not just the names in them. The pages an engine cites for your category are a finite, addressable list, and appearing on them is usually faster than trying to outrank them.

What you need

  • The unbranded buyer prompts from your visibility measurement.
  • The full answers, including their citation links, not just a summary.
  1. 01Collect the answers where you are absent

Start with the prompts where you were not named. These are the answers doing you the most damage and they carry the most information, because they show a complete recommendation built entirely without you.

  2. 02Extract the cited sources, per engine

List every domain and page the answers cited. Keep them separated by engine rather than pooled: engines draw on substantially different sources, and a source list averaged across engines will send you to pages that only one of them reads.

  3. 03Separate rivals from platforms

Two very different things appear in these lists. Competitor pages, where the fix is competitive. And platforms: review sites, community threads, roundups and comparison pages, where the fix is to be present and accurate.

Platforms are usually the faster route. You are not trying to outrank a rival's homepage; you are trying to appear on a page that already ranks and that an engine already trusts.

  4. 04Rank the targets by leverage, not by authority alone

The useful ordering combines three things: how often engines cite the page for your category, how authoritative its domain is, and whether it is a page you could realistically appear on.

A frequently cited roundup that accepts submissions is worth far more of your attention than a frequently cited page that will never change. Authority alone would rank them the same.

  5. 05Earn the mention, and be accurate in it

Approach the publisher with something genuinely worth including: a correction, a missing option, data they do not have. Give them your facts in a form they can check.

Be precise about what you do, because whatever you supply is what engines will eventually repeat about you. A generous exaggeration on a third-party page becomes a claim you cannot retract from an answer.

Manufacturing mentions at scale on pages that do not merit them is the tactic that gets brands removed from the sources they depend on. It is a fast way to lose the asset you are trying to build.

  6. 06Re-measure the prompts, not the placement

A placement is an output, not an outcome. The question is whether the answers changed, so return to the original prompts and measure again with the same method and a comparable sample.

Expect a lag. Engines refresh their view of a source on their own schedule, and a mention earned this week may not appear in answers for some time.

What this method does not do

  • Not every cited source is winnable. Some pages are editorially closed, and the honest move is to spend your effort on the ones that are not.
  • Citation lists change as engines update. A target list is a snapshot and is worth refreshing rather than working from for months.

Every step above works without buying anything. If you would rather have it run repeatedly with the sample sizes attached, our free report does the measurement on your own domain.
