We fact-checked a Google AI Mode answer against the vendor’s own docs. The docs lost the argument the answer started.
While researching data vendors for our own product, we asked Google’s AI Mode to compare two SEO data providers. The answer was fluent, structured, and confident. It described one vendor’s LLM mention tracking as covering the major assistants, in a list that included Claude and Perplexity.
Then we did what an answer engine cannot be trusted to do for you yet: we read the vendor’s own API documentation, the same day. The documented product covered ChatGPT and Google surfaces. Claude and Perplexity were not in the documented coverage. The marketing-flavored claim in the AI answer and the vendor’s own technical docs disagreed, and the docs are the ones that bill you.
This was not a hallucination in the classic sense. Every ingredient of the answer existed somewhere in the vendor’s orbit: broad marketing copy, category pages, third-party writeups. The answer engine assembled the most generous reading. That is the failure mode that matters for buyers: AI answers inherit the gap between what a company markets and what its documentation commits to.
We were the buyer in this story. The gap changed our integration plan: we adopted the vendor for the surfaces its docs actually commit to, and we refused the product the AI answer had oversold, in writing, in our own planning documents.
What this means if you sell anything
The same assembly happens when an AI answer describes your product. It reads your marketing, your docs, your reviews, your rivals’ comparison pages, and it composes the version it finds most coherent. If those sources disagree, the answer can be generous or brutal, and you will not know which until you measure it.
That is the discipline we build for. Ansengine measures what the engines actually say about a brand, repeatedly, with sample sizes attached. It extracts the claims circulating about you so you can mark which are true and which are not, and every piece of content it drafts is grounded in the verified list, never the folklore. The fact-check you just read is the product philosophy applied to our own purchasing.
The checklist we used
- Ask the answer engine, save the full answer, note the sources it cites.
- Open the vendor’s technical documentation for the specific endpoint or SKU, not the landing page.
- Treat every capability the docs do not commit to as absent, whatever the marketing implies.
- Where the answer and the docs disagree, the docs win, and the gap itself is information.
